The most important tools are outlined here

Selection Tool

This is the selection tool, which you use to isolate or move a page element. It resembles a standard black mouse arrow when active.

Direct Selection Tool

direct selection tool   This is the direct selection tool. There is an important distinction between the white direct selection tool and the black arrow select tool. The direct selection tool lets you control items within a selection, such as an image within a frame, the angle of the sides of a polygon, and so on. Do not use the direct selection tool to merely select or move items, or strange results will occur.

Type Tool

text tool   This is the type tool. If you want to type or modify text, you must use the text tool to create a space to begin typing or to highlight existing text with the mouse. The mouse becomes the "I-beam" ()element when the type tool is active.

Frame, Rectangle & Line Tool

frame tool   This is the frame tool. It is used wherever you wish to set aside space for a graphic such as a photo. Its X-less companion to the right is the rectangle tool, which is used to draw boxes, and between the rectangle and text tools is the stroke tool, with which you can draw lines.
